Bebop Spoken Here has gained privileged access to the rehearsal night of a new, young big band. Based in the Chester-
Several familiar faces sat in the sections as a youthful Mellis put, for the most part, his even younger charges through their paces. Leading from the front, trumpet in hand, Mellis examined three or four pieces in some detail. A ‘section pencil’ was passed around as necessary as members made notes ‘at bar 32’, ‘on the off beat’, and other similar markings. The orchestra’s collective attention and the evident advanced sight-reading abilities of all made a big impression. The Lambton Big Band’s big night isn’t too far off. MD Mellis has booked the Black Swan venue in Newcastle Arts Centre on the second Saturday in December (9th) with advance tickets available at tickets@skiddle.com. The gig is being billed as ‘Lambton Big Band Xmas Debut’ and, unsurprisingly, the pad will feature several Christmassy tunes! This rehearsal night heard the band running through White Christmas and The Christmas Song with Mellis frequently halting proceedings having heard a misplaced crochet or two! Mellis has clearly established an excellent rapport with his fellow musicians and the enthusiasm of all was sustained throughout the evening. The band’s MD is a former student of Michael Lamb – it showed! Organised, committed, the similarities abounded. A few seasonal tunes are good enough for the Strictly Smokin’ Big Band (check out the band’s December bookings) therefore the Lambton Big Band is in good company!
It is early days but the signs are good. There is room on the scene for another big band. Prepare to welcome the Lambton Big Band!
