Singing iffy but added to fun and I think that of all Jazz singers (all need to listen to some Soul).
Attendance a shame for those there and those not but made it more relaxed. As Trilok Gurtu said in Sage 1. We're used to it.
Seems unfair to continue this discussion on a review of a Polly Gibbons album.
Gladys Knight has a terrific voice but, like Benson, has suffered from serious lapses in taste over the decades which, according to no 1 sister and brother in law, she brought to the Sage last year.
Like Lady Soul and Diana Ross, she descended into cabaret.
Most singers nowadays listen to Ella, Billie, Nina and media music - what Frank called radio music. Nothing makes you realise how lightweight, naff and childish media music is like real soul, which is precisely why the media simply pretends it doesn't exist.
I'd also like to say a word about the various North East singers, where we're doing rather well thank you very much.
