Multi instrumentalist Tcha Limberger is returning to
Sage Gateshead. This Sunday, October 2, Limberger will be in Hall Two with his
Budapest Gypsy Orchestra. Belgian born Tcha, of the Manouche tradition, will
lead his seven piece band in a programme centred on the folk music traditions
of Central Europe. On this current tour Limberger will be playing violin – he
is also an accomplished guitarist – alongside fellow string instrumentalists
Olah Norbert (viola, or the ‘brac’ bowed alternative), Ruzo Istvan on violin
and Szegfu Karoly, double bass.
The Budapest Gypsy Orchestra’s concert performances
have won acclaim from many quarters; the improvising element attracted praise
from the respected Jazz Mann blog, Songlines and F Roots magazines similarly
heaped superlatives upon Limberger’s hot outfit. The Sage Gateshead concert
should have wide appeal. Jazz fans will appreciate astonishing, virtuoso playing, a broader
audience will perhaps draw parallels with the Bueno Vista Social Club
phenomenon. Concert goers in Hall Two will marvel at Feher Istvan’s cimbalom. A
cross-stringed instrument akin to a piano or dulcimer, Istvan can justifiably
be described as a master musician. As a piece of furniture the cimbalom is a
work of art!
