Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Price Smokin’ at the Jazz Café

(Preview by Russell)
Following the Nigel Price Trio’s incendiary performance at the inaugural Ushaw Durham Jazz Festival, guitarist Price is heading to Newcastle’s Jazz Café. Clear your diary! Friday, September 16 is the date. You must get to the Jazz Café on Pink Lane. Arrive early, bag a seat in the upstairs room and hold on tight! Read Stephen Tulip’s review of the guitarist’s sensational performance at Ushaw then pick up the phone and book your tickets for what promises to be one helluva smokin’ gig. At the Jazz Café Price will be working with Ross Stanley, Hammond groove master, and the brilliant drummer Steve Brown.

As a bonus, there will be a support set from the Early Bird Band. Tutored by Paul Edis, it is great to see young musicians taking to the stage on such a prestigious gig. Expectations are high, these lads are more than up to meeting and exceeding them.

Nigel Price is currently on a mammoth tour - fifty plus dates - and the band is on smokin’ hot form. Don’t miss the Newcastle date. Jazz Café on Friday, September 16. It starts at 8:15pm (doors 7:45pm). Advance tickets cost £5.00. Don’t delay, telephone the Jazz Café today on 0191 222 9882. If you don’t, you risk being turned away on the night!
Russell.
