This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Further Reflections on Ushaw…

The inaugural Ushaw Durham Jazz Festival welcomed visitors from County Durham and beyond. First-time visitors to Ushaw College were knocked out by the scale and grandeur of the former Catholic seminary. The jazz on offer similarly delivered a knockout blow. Concerts, talks, workshops, an artist in residence and a wander down Jazz Alley, Ushaw was, for three days, the jazz capital of the world.
Great music, plentiful food and drink, welcoming staff (many of them volunteers), made for a memorable first festival. Highlights? Ushaw itself, the fine weather, the people, the walk down Jazz Alley, the matchstick model of Durham Cathedral, Dennis’ quip: It’s a lang walk as he bade the second liners farewell on their march around Ushaw, Abraham Lincoln, a fire alarm, remembering Louis Stewart.
Members of Ryton Camera Club enjoyed themselves during the weekend. Two favourite photographs…Barnes and Adams having a ding-dong and Darlington lad Joe Williamson reflecting on the music of Square One.
