Rebecca Poole, who also moonlights as Purdy under which moniker she toured with Jools Holland, appeared on the Netflex TV series The Crown as well as sharing a stage with Jamie Cullum at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival and singing to 90,000 at Wembley, returns to her jazz roots with nine originals and an Elvis Costello cover.
Poole's co-pilots on several of the originals: Ian Barter, Andy Wight, Jamie McCredie, Stockbridge and McMillan provide the melodies that gel perfectly with her words just as they do when she provides both components herself.
Her decision to write her own songs as opposed to those standards that had already been done to death was a commendable idea. However, commendable as it is, it is only commendable if you can deliver the goods.
Rebecca Poole delivers the goods - and how! Every song has meaningful lyrics and a melody worthy of a place in the Great British Contemporary Song Book if there is such an infinite volume. If there isn't, well there is now!
Needless to say the backing is equally on the money with fine solos from Edwards, Stockbridge and McMillan. It's available from October 6 on PURDY MUSIC. Lance
