Following the Alex Clarke Quartet's superb concert, the tried and tested jam session format in the intimate Black Swan bar transferred into the larger performance space for a late night Newcastle Jazz Festival jam session. The house trio - Alan Law, Paul Grainger and Abbie Finn - didn't need any introduction to jam session regulars, however, some in the audience were, perhaps, new to it all. By accident or design, the opener - Just Friends - seemed rather appropriate.

Harry Keeble, tenor sax, Pete Tanton, trumpet, these are the guys you hope to see - and hear - at a jam session. They're guaranteed to produce the goods and that's exactly what they did this evening. And to the singers...there was a) Jan Spencelayh (Angel Eyes), b) Niffi Osiyemi (Sweet Georgia Brown), and c) Minnie Fraser ('Round Midnight). Three contrasting vocalists, all hitting the mark. Any self-respecting jazz festival should have a jam session, Newcastle Jazz Festival has one, let's keep it that way - next year, the year after and the year after that and... Russell
