This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Saying It With Jazz by Joan Merrill

An essential website for singers and those interested in the history and the art of jazz singing by broadcaster, producer, and author of five jazz based mystery novels - to mention but some of her achievements - Joan Merrill of South Bend, Indiana.
Subtitled From Bessie to Eva the website enables the listener to hear repeats of her hour-long NPR radio shows profiling some of the greatest vocalists of the decades ranging from Bessie Smith in the 1920s to Eva Cassidy in the 1960s and a bit further.

There's also similar portraits of composers and lots of recorded examples.

Inevitably, there will be some nitpicking as to who is in and who is not but I'm not going down that road. It achieves what it sets out to achieve which is an introduction to the musical genre jazz singing and its repertory, the Great American Songbook, during its development roughly 1920 to 1960.
