The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Herbie Hudson remembers Ray Shenton

Ray and I grew up together and at 13-years-old formed a harmonica trio called the Harmonica Hoodlums and we performed on a BBC television show - All Your Own. About a year later we did a mini- tour with the then popular Five Smith Brothers performing at several Moss Empire theatres as well as various other gigs including another local radio show – Wot Cheor Geordie.

After getting hooked on the then vibrant trad jazz scene we formed the River City Jazzmen (pictured)* and, as the saying goes, the rest is history with many great years playing some fine trad jazz with a lot of fantastic gigs and many memories. However, after Ray finished his university studies to go on and become a fine architect he had to put his musician skills aside although still continuing to pop up on the local jazz scene as well the local folk scene where he was greatly respected.

Ray and I kept in touch over our latter years doing odd gigs and only a couple of years ago he led me back into the still popular folk scene where I’m enjoying playing with some fine musicians. I will miss Ray so much, he has been a big part of my life and he will be very much missed both on the music scene and as my friend. Herbie

Hello Herbie, It’s Mark, Ray’s son. Thank you for your lovely tribute. We have been having such great memories coming our way yesterday and today. Great picture too - I’ll send Lance one of you 3 Hoodlums…

We are waiting on confirmation of Dad’s funeral date and his wake venue which I would be happy to post so that anyone who knew Dad could come along. Its so nice to get little infills into Dad’s stories of his early music years. I know he’ll be playing with the jazz band of angels already there…
