Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Ten Hank Mobley albums I couldn't live without

Reflecting upon the Sonny Clark six Blue Note CD set recently released by Mosaic Records which is currently playing practically non-stop in my humble abode to the extent that the neighbours can probably sing the solos. Even if the can't they've certainly picked up on Art Blakey's drumming judging by the way they are banging on the wall!

No, apart from the above lies (I actually have very understanding neighbours), my further reflections centred around the other musicians on the various tracks and, in particular, tenor saxist Hank Mobley.

Mobley is my favourite tenor player - at least for today. This doesn't mean I rate him better than Hawk, Lester, Ben, Stan, Wardell, Dexter, Trane, Sonny (both of them), Wayne or Tubbs it's just purely, at this moment in time, his sound and his laid back approach is the one that gives me goosebumps.

Here are ten albums (in no particular order) that are well worthy of checking out:

Soul Station

Another Workout

The Turnaround

Dippin'

Three Classic Albums (Hank Mobley/Poppin'/Peckin' Time)

Sonny Clark - Dial 'S' For Sonny

Miles DavisQuintet - Live at the Black Hawk Lance
