Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Album review: The Jazz Warriors - The Jazz Warriors

Ken Serio (drums); Sakis Zachariades (guitar); Jedd Chlebowski (bass); Ali Ryerson (flutes); Tomoko Ohno (piano/keys); Josi Davies (vocals/keys).

I must confess that when presented with an album by a band setting its stall out as the Jazz Warriors I anticipated something a bit more funky. These are more Eco warriors rather than those who stormed battlements, crossed burnt bridges or lobbed grenades into machine gun nests. Further confusion reigns when I realised that this brand of mercenaries are not the Jazz Warriors that gave, among others, Courtney Pine, Orphy Robinson and Gail Thompson a break and later spawned Tomorrow's Warriors but some new 'kids' on the block.

Yet the end result is the same, they conquer the listener with funky grooves that had me thinking I was at a jazz disco. And yes, it does have that late night feeling from back in the day. Nevertheless, the, mainly original (Metheny and Stern are also in there), numbers grow upon you with repeated listening. I absolutely loved Ryerson's fluting on Ohno's JB.  Ohno, I immediately renamed 'Ohyes!  Not just for this tune but her various other solos and compositions.

However, to single any one out in this international line-up would be unfair - they are all 'the goods'. Having said that, I must mention that Josi Davies' vocals don't do any harm and I, for one, look forward to hearing more from her. Lance
