The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Rest In Peace Ray Shenton

Just received the sad news of the passing of pianist and tuba player Ray Shenton - possibly the last senior member of the legendary north east/west and elsewhere traditional jazz dynasty that comprised reedsman Bill Shenton and washboard ace Joe Shenton both of whom are no longer with us.

Ray (on tuba) and Joe were both original members of the River City Jazzmen and all three were involved in the Great Whittington Jazz Picnic which ran for 15 years in that picturesque Northumberland village.

This is but a preliminary post that I hope to expand as more information is received.

I am so sad to hear of Ray’s passing, not only was he a brilliant musician, but he was also the life and soul of any gathering as well as being an awesome artist (I mean drawing and painting as well as musical). He will be very sadly missed.
