This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Merlin Roxby @ Prohibition Bar - Aug. 17

The second night of this year's Newcastle Jazz Festival drew a capacity crowd to the Strictly Smokin' Big Band's gig in the upstairs room at the Bridge Hotel (see BSH Editor-in-Chief's review). An early start (seven o'clock) brought about a relatively early finish, time enough to dash along the road to Prohibition Bar...

Merlin Roxby maintains a residency on Pink Lane. This evening, by the time your correspondent arrived, ragtime pianist Merlin was enjoying a quiet pint just before packing up for the night. The good guy that he is, not wanting to disappoint our party of three, Merlin said he would play a couple more. A while later Merlin returned to the house upright. It was like being at a house party gig!
