Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: Newcastle Jazz Festival - Wednesday 16 August

This year's Newcastle Jazz Festival runs over five days at four established venues. Beginning on Wednesday 16 August, Newcastle Jazz Co-op hosts a double bill of emerging musicians. The Ben Shankland Trio and the duo of Amy Thatcher and Fran Knowles is an attractive looking prospect. The Globe on Railway Street has witnessed some tremendous performances during its near decade-long existence as a community owned music venue and the appearance of pianist Ben Shankland could prove to be an 'I was there' occasion.

Shankland, from Edinburgh, studied classical piano and bassoon, later turning to jazz. Mentored by John Turville, Alan Benzie and Tommy Smith, the American pianist Fred Hersch is an acknowledged influence. Joining Shankland two weeks today to play a hard bop-to-original composition set will be bassist and 2022 BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year Ewan Hastie and drummer Chun Wei-Kang. The other half of the Globe's double bill features Amy Thatcher and Fran Knowles. Accordionist Amy boasts an impressive cv - Kathyrn Tickell, Sting and the Royal Northern Sinfonia. Percussionist/pianist Fran has toured the world with drum street theatre outfit Spark! Our duo will be dipping into their album Emergency of the Female Kind and, no doubt, premiering some new material.
