Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

New Century Ragtime Orchestra

(Press release)

After two years' enforced absence due to the pandemic, I'm delighted to let you know that the New Century Ragtime Orchestra will be performing their annual Tyneside concert, once again featuring Caroline Stephen on vocals on Saturday 11 February, this time at a brand-new venue!

We'll be playing our usual mix of classic ragtime,1920s hot dance music and early 1930s swing numbers at the King's Hall, Armstrong Building, Newcastle University NE1 7RU. The Armstrong Building is immediately opposite the Royal Victoria Infirmary on Queen Victoria Road, and the nearest car parks are at the bottom of Claremont Road or the Eldon Square multi-storey. The nearest metro station is Haymarket, a five-minute walk away.

The concert will start at 7pm on Saturday 11 February, with doors opening at 6.30pm. Tickets remain at an inflation-busting £15 (no increase for 5 years!) and are available on the door (subject to capacity) or in advance from Dave Kerr 0191 281 4011 or Email: ragtimedavekerr@aol.com

Pre-booked tickets will be held on the door and paid for on collection, but regrettably only by cash or cheque, as we cannot accept credit or debit cards.

We hope you can join us for another authentic and entertaining evening's journey through the music of exactly one century ago! Phil Rutherford

The New Century Ragtime Orchestra: This twelve-piece orchestra plays music from the dawn of ragtime in the 1890s through to the early swing era of the 1930s.

Lovingly recreated from the original sheet music and painstakingly scored for full ensemble, we perform not only ragtime composers such as Scott Joplin but also the classic jazz and hot dance music of the 1920’s, and the early swing of Duke Ellington.
