This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: Alan Barnes to play Opus 4 (Fri 10 Feb.)!

Tomorrow (Friday 10) Alan Barnes will be in the region to play two gigs in a day. The first of them, a lunchtime engagement at Bishop Auckland Town Hall is sold out. However, in the evening at the Traveller's Rest in Darlington it is possible to pay at the door to hear Barnes with the Dean Stockdale Trio. Barnes is a perennial favourite at Opus 4 Jazz Club, making annual visits to the West Auckland Road pub since before the first ice age some two and a half million years ago. The musicianship is second to none and the witty repartee never fails to entertain. Join Barnes, Dean Stockdale (piano), Mick Shoulder (bass) and drummer Abbie Finn for an eight o'clock start. Doors at 7:30pm, £12.00 admission, arrive early to bag a seat. Russell
