The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: Syd Lawrence Orchestra: Big Band Brass @ The Fire Station, Sunderland (February 15)

A proud history of thousands of concert performances at venues throughout the land, with many more concerts in the diary, suggest the Syd Lawrence Orchestra is as popular today as it was when Syd Lawrence established the band way back in 1967. Chris Dean has been at the helm since 1996 and next week there is an opportunity to catch the 2023 edition of the band at Sunderland's Fire Station. 

It's likely some familiar faces will be in the sections - Jay Craig (reeds) has been with the band for many years, drummer Dave Tandy is renowned for his explosive solos, and in recent times the trumpet section has included none other than Louis Dowdeswell. Whoever is in the line-up on the night, it's guaranteed to be a first rate show (Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington et al). Join Chris Dean's Syd Lawrence Orchestra on Wednesday 15th (7:30pm).
