(Press release) Heart
of Hawick has announced two jazz concerts that might appeal to Bebop Spoken
Here readers.
Saxophonist Helena Kay’s KIM Trio
with Peter Johnstone celebrate the recent release of their album Golden Sands,
on Friday 31st March. The group, led by the former Young
Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year and the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra’s
resident alto player (here on tenor), features bassist Calum Gourlay and
drummer Dave Ingamells alongside Peter Johnstone.
Golden Sands has been described by Jazzwise as “subtly enchanting” and “impressive" by Bebop Spoken Here’s own Lance Liddle, who also described Kay’s group as “A-list”.
Like Kay a former Young Scottish Jazz
Musician of the Year, Peter Johnstone won the Peter Whittingham Jazz Prize with
the Scottish quartet Square One and has gone on to work with saxophonist Tommy
Smith, in a duo as well as in Smith’s “Coltrane” quartet, and with the Scottish
National Jazz Orchestra, saxophonist Paul Towndrow and the organ trio Prime.
Dutch violinist Tim Kliphuis’ trio
appears at Heart of Hawick Saturday 27th May. Known for his swinging approach
in the style of the late French virtuoso Stephane Grappelli, Kliphuis marries
jazz with classical pieces and music from various folk traditions and has become
a popular attraction internationally. He’s joined by two Scots, guitarist Nigel
Clark and double bassist Roy Percy.
Situated in the Scottish Borders
country, Hawick is approximately sixty miles from Newcastle on the A68. For
