This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Dexter Gordon - What's New - 29 july 1964 • World of Jazz


One of, if not the, greatest modern jazz tenor saxophonists. How I'd have loved to have been on Central Ave. in LA when Dexter and Wardell were carving each other up on the bandstand. Today would have been Dexter's centenary. Loved him both before and after I saw him at the University Theatre in Newcastle back in, I think, the mid-1980s. Lance

Glad you are a Dexter fan Lance. I have the Jazz Icons DVD which contains this great ballad.
He is still my number one tenorman. When i saw him in Sheffield I had a quick conversation with him about soprano mouthpieces. He had just played Satin Doll on Soprano. His mouthpiece was a metal Selmer E if I remember correctly.
