Led by Ian Bosworth, Just Friends, formed from well known and respected local jazz musicians, provided the audience with a night of very entertaining jazz.
The opener, I'm Comin' Home Baby, made for a lively start showing how tight an ensemble they were and with excellent solos from Richie, Ian and Dave coupled with great backing from Ron on bass and Mark on drums this set the style for the rest of the night.
Appropriate for the coming week, My Funny Valentine featured Richie and some wonderful soulful sax playing.
The mood changed with Affirmation from George Benson's album Breezin' followed by Stanley Turrentine's Sugar and Jaco Pastorius' funky number The Chicken.
Happy Birthday was played for 92-year-old Frank who went on to request Sonny Rollins' St. Thomas which brought the first set to a close.
The second set began with the aptly named Just Friends followed by Herbie Hancock's Cantaloupe Island. Oliver Nelson's Stolen Moments, a blues with great feeling, preceded the Joe Zawinul/Cannonball Adderley classic Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.
Bringing the night to close was a jazz fusion number from the pad of The Crusaders - Put It Where You Want It. Driven on by drums and bass and excellent solos all round it showed the band at its best.
Another successful guest band night and nice to see Frank with his family celebrating his 92nd. birthday.
