The opening event of this year’s Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music comprised an exhibition of graphic scores with accompanying live performance in the Newcastle Arts Centre Gallery.
Each musician and the visual artist described the background, notation and interpretation when improvising whilst following the graphical scores, many of which were displayed in the gallery space, surrounding the musicians and audience alike. A very attentive audience were taken through several ‘scores’ culminating in a 5-section score which was played by each musician in turn, and then collectively as a trio, bringing the score to life!
A very colourful performance, both visually and musically. Ken D
