This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Live from Emmet's Place #71 - Sept. 27

Wow! The two tenors of Seamus Blake and Troy Roberts, this was old school stuff, swinging non-stop. Emmet Cohen sure does have a contacts book! Host Cohen at the Steinway, Russell Hall, bass and guest drummer Jonathan Barber (Hey! Where's Kyle, Kyle Poole?).

Opening with Lockjaw Davis' Hey Lock! this could have been Lockjaw and Johnny Griffin, as it was, we were listening to Canadian Blake and Aussie Roberts. Tremendous blowing. That Old Devil Moon maintained the pace, the tenors jousting, Cohen dazzling, Hall soloing too. 
Blake introduced a 'samba-fied' Along Came Betty. Stupendous playing from the quartet (Roberts had gone to the bathroom). And on to a beautiful take on Skylark. Time for Roberts to play something (Blake in the wings, watching on). King of Hearts from the Aussie's most recent album. Opening Coltrane-like in structure, McCoy Tyner chords and more, astounding right hand from Cohen, Roberts, coiled before unleashing a torrent of notes. Amazing! Post-Coltrane jazz at its best. Taking it down, time for Roberts to play a ballad, a case of anything Mr B can do...

Coltrane time - Moment's Notice. First to step up, Mr B, blistering, this time with the real McCoy chords behind him. Over to you Mr R. Roberts sauntered into view, Johnny Cool. Slowly but surely, more wrought, paint-stripping tenor with ace piano, bass and drums along for the ride. To close, bop blues heaven, all blowing. Live stream gig of the year! Russell
