Bebop Spoken There

Melissa Aldana: ''Having to play a ballads album, which is something very revealing for a saxophone player, would help me to question some new aspects of how to go deeper into sound." (DownBeat May, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sunday Night @ The Globe (June 13, 8:00pm)

(Press release)

Charlotte Keeffe’s unique approach and passion for jazz, experimental and freely improvised music sees her performing regularly as a soloist and as part of a variety of different ensembles, including her own Quartet. The Charlotte Keeffe Quartet performed a sell-out performance at Lancaster Jazz Festival in 2019 and their live recording from Jazz in the Round has been played regularly on radio stations across the UK and internationally.

Her Quartet features Ashley John Long on double bass, Ben Handysides on drums, Moss Freed on guitar and herself on trumpet and flugelhorn; they explore merging together Charlotte’s more composed music with free improvising. The Charlotte Keeffe Quartet can be heard on Discus Music’s Right Here, Right Now (spring 2021) release, alongside a selection of her improvised works for solo, duo and large ensembles.

“Fresh on the scene, trumpeter Charlotte Keeffe is a whirlwind of extended techniques and tactile puzzles, removing the mouthpiece to elicit a windy howl, using her left hand as a mute in the bell of the horn and revelling in restless possibilities.” Daniel Spicer, Jazzwise Magazine.

This concert is presented by Jazz North East in association with Jazz.Coop at The Globe. Tickets.

You can also download the pdf file by clicking ‘Return to Merchant’ immediately after you have paid. You can watch the gig live and at any time during the following week.

If there is nothing there please email events@theglobenewcastle.bar or send a message to our Facebook page.
A livestream ticket costs £7.50. You may like to pay more if you are feeling generous or if there is more than one person watching.  This would be really welcome at this difficult time when income for musicians and venues is drastically reduced.
