The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Deschanel Gordon Trio featuring Alex Hitchcock @ 606 Club - June 26

Deschanel Gordon (piano); Will Sach (bass); Will Cleasby (drums); Alex Hitchcock (tenor sax)

It seems incredible that only a few months ago, November 2020 to be precise, Deschanel Gordon was relatively unknown to myself and probably most of our readers. Now, after winning the BBC Young Jazz Musician 2020, he pops up just about everywhere. Ronnie's, Smitty's, 606, just about anywhere of prominence on the London jazz scene and beyond.

Deservedly so, he is a powerhouse player  as well being a sensitive one. Although the Oscar Peterson influence is ever present he's no clone, he's absorbed rather than copied and, along with his other influences such as Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner and Mulgrew Miller, has developed an individual style which hints at even greater things to come.

With Wills Sach and Cleasby and tenor titan Alex Hitchcock, the quartet impressed. Most of the compositions were by Gordon and they varied between frantic and tender, often during the course of the same tune.

On tenor, Hitchcock worked the changes with an angular agility that often shot off in unexpected directions bringing smiles of appreciative understanding from the other three. At one stage he threw in Jumpin' With Symphony Sid as an extended quote. Sach and Cleasby too had their moments. Sach must be a pianist's dream bass player - everything sounds just so right - whilst Cleasby catches every nuance, every change of pace and with Deschanel there's plenty of them to keep you on your toes.

A great first set and no padding it out with rounds of fours! My only regret was that us livestreamers have to make do with just that one set!  Lance.
