This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Summer’s here – at last - and finally the music scene is opening up again.  Nonetheless, all the venues below are still taking the pandemic very seriously and assure us that these concerts are safe for customers and musicians alike.  

Tues 3 August Pizza Express, Dean St London W1:  Quintet Blue, featuring Denys Baptiste (tenor sax) and Nigel Price (guitar).  Two of the UK’s greatest jazz improvisers join forces with a rhythm section led by Alex Webb to play the grooviest music of the 50s and 60s - tunes by Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, Ahmad Jamal and lots of blues! Sat 14 August The Bear Club, Luton: Tony Kofi’s ‘A Portrait of Cannonball’  Alto boss Tony Kofi’s acclaimed tribute to saxophonist Cannonball Adderley returns with Andy Davies (trumpet), Alex Webb (piano), Andrew Cleyndert (bass) and Alfonso Vitale (drums).  Their album, ‘Another Kind of Soul’, won the Presto Music prize for one the top jazz albums of 2020. For tickets and info.
