Brazilian born, now London based, Bakuna has had a much-travelled career. Not just in his own country but also at various festivals around the world. That he is a worthy musical ambassador is well-demonstrated in this jaunty album.
The rhythms are infectious, proving that there is more to Brazil than the bossa nova. The blurb describes Brazil as the most musically-rich country in the world and they may well be right.
The fact that all of the lyrics are in Portuguese, which isn't my first language, means that although I haven't a clue what the songs are all about it doesn't detract from the enjoyment - a comparision could be drawn with Italian opera or scat-singing. For a Gringo such as myself the voice is seen as another instrument. Even more so when Bakuna takes a vocal trumpet solo.
Piano, bass and drums are on the centavos and Pereira's solo over a piano vamp on the final track is truly extraordinário. Lance
