Bebop Spoken There

Gary Bartz: ''Music is nature's gift to man. It's the only religion. We're living in a terrible era, but what a beautiful thing music is. Look how it brings us together like religion is supposed to; and with no language barriers.'' (Jazzwise September, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Rossano Sportiello: Live from the Flat #36 - June 15

(Screenshot by Russell)
Rossano Sportiello (piano); Pasquale Grasso (guitar)

Since October last year Italian-born, NYC-resident pianist Rossano Sportiello has been live streaming on a weekly basis from his Greenwich Village flat. Most weeks Sportiello has a guest musician with him, this evening fellow Italian, guitarist Pasquale Grasso joined him to play an hour's worth of choice standards.

As our duo began to play Out of Nowhere it was striking how large Pasquale Grasso's hands are! Tal Farlow was noted for his wide span on the fretboard, Grasso appears to have a similar gift/advantage. Our host, Sportiello, exudes warmth, smiling all the while, a most elegant pianist utilising his classical background, a master of Harlem stride and other styles.

I Cover the WaterfrontHave You Met Miss Jones?, our duo weaving in and out of one another's solo lines, Sportiello with his back to Grasso, a trusting, telepathic pairing. Grasso's solo rendition of Have You Met Miss Jones? held the online audience spellbound - what a great player! Anything Mr Grasso can do...the ever-elegant Mr Sportiello treated us to a Neapolitan song from his youth.

There's No You (recorded by Jo Stafford and Frank Sinatra), beautifully played, brought us almost to the end of a most enjoyable set. Almost...Sportiello thought it a good idea to go out on Sweet Georgia Brown. Boy! These guys can play!            Russell
