This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Jazzwise in July

Another fine issue of Jazzwise that, once again, is not without a north-east presence. A recent issue had a photo, a feature and an interview with singer, wordsmith and award winning vocalist Zoé Gilby and this July issue has a feature on local heroes Archipelago as well as a four star review of their most recent album - Echoes to the Sky. The fact that the interviewer and the reviewer offered alternative spellings to Faye MacCalman's surname in no way lessened the meaningful observations of either writer. Archipelago, incidentally, along with Faith Brackenbury, can be heard at Gosforth Civic Theatre, Newcastle (8:00pm) on June 25 for the launch of the aforementioned  album as part of a GCT Jazz Club-Jazz North East co-promotion.

The magazine also contains a fair to middling review of a Chris Sharkey CD as well as an interview with Alan Barnes by Simon Spillett, two musicians who are well known in this (and every other) area.

Brian Priestley offers a perspective re-evaluation of piano legend, Bill Evans and includes this poetic quote from Miles Davis: "...the sound he [Bill Evans] got was like crystal notes or sparkling water cascading down from some clear waterfall ..."

Poetic indeed! However, it doesn't cut it for me in quite the same way as Eddie Condon's legendary words upon hearing Bix for the first time "...the sound came out like a girl saying 'yes'".

I'll take girls saying 'yes' over sparkling water every time! Lance
