Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Ella Hohnen-Ford - June 20

(Screenshot by Russell)
Ella Hohnen-Ford (vocals); Giacomo Smith (clarinet); Will Arnold-Forster (guitar); Will Sach (double bass) + Kit Downes (piano)

North London, Sunday, 7:30. Ella Hohnen-Ford invited some of the boys over to play a few tunes. The Wills - Messrs Arnold-Forster, guitar, and Sach, bass - were joined by Kansas Smitty's Main Man, Mr Giacomo Smith playing clarinet. Later they would be joined by a special guest.

Under a Blanket of Blue for starters. Simply fabulous. 'Deed I Do with Ella's assured scat singing raised the bar, this was as good as anything you're likely to hear in London, NYC or anywhere else you care to mention. After a while the evening's special guest joined the party. Kit Downes knows a tune or two and fitted in with consummate ease accompanying Ella on Georgia on My Mind. Our singer's ace band cruised along on Stars Fell on Alabama (comp. Frank Perkins, lyrics Mitchell Parish), Downes playing some dazzling piano as Ella sang (scatting), making it look and sound so easy.

September in the Rain featured top notch solos from one and all, great stuff. Our Love is Here to Stay swung ever so gently, Giacomo scarcely able to restrain himself from swinging it out the door, Kit comping like nobody's business. From September in the Rain to Ella's wonderfully expressive Autumn in New York. Superb! More next week, what a treat!
