The seeds for this album were planted when the New Orleans band found themselves playing a dance in a local juke joint. It was a late sweaty night and the band, who had changed their set to suit the gig, knew by the end of the session that they had to put this down for posterity.
And why not? It's a great set that brings to mind juke joints down in Louisiana or maybe a trad pub somewhere in England (I wish!)
Think of The House of the Black Gardenia or maybe Kansas Smitty and you're getting close but not quite close enough. I guess this is indigenous to jazz in New Orleans as it is today. The title sums it up Songs of Future Past. I haven't quite worked it out but I get the idea. A set list that includes numbers by Tom Waits and Irving Berlin suggests that the future and the past can indeed live together - particularly in the present. It may only run for 35 minutes but, trust me, they are 35 minutes well spent.
