Three months and counting. This week's Rico's Popup Louis trained the spotlight on Jabbo Smith. Joining Mr Tomasso this evening was none other than Mr Martin Wheatley playing guitar, double-tracking on a couple of the numbers with guitar or banjo. Our trumpet host commented that the weather was changing in Chiswick, just as it was here on Tyneside with thunder 'n' lightning on the way.
Rico playing Got Butter On It as Jabbo played it with Ikey Robinson opened the half hour set - Rico in Hawaiian shirt, Martin already dressed in a DJ for tomorrow night's Dress Up Saturday session. Rico made the observation that he was born in St James' Hospital, Leeds and it seemed like a good idea to play St James' Infirmary as Jabbo would have played it. Rico emphasised would because Jabbo Smith didn't record the number but would undoubtedly have played it because all the top guys at the time would have played it. Martin accompanied on guitar.
Sweet and Lowdown Blues heard Rico on muted horn by way of emulating the clarinet part, scatting as he went. To close this evening's live stream Rico momentarily regretted asking Martin to set a 'fierce tempo' on Jazz Battle saying he thought it would be way to fast but, as Martin laid down the rhythm accompaniment three days ago, it was too late now! And off Martin went, pistons pumping, Rico laughing nervously, then going for it. Of course we knew all along that Rico would nail it and he did. More tomorrow (Saturday) at seven.
