Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Review: Big Band Bash - June 10

Steve Walker presents a weekly celebration of all things big band jazz on Coastal Sound Radio. Broadcasting from Skegness, trumpeter, arranger and big band MD Walker knows his stuff alright and, if the number of star names pitching in with celebrity station idents is anything to go by, our presenter knows everyone who is anyone on the big band scene.

Stan Kenton opened and closed this week's edition of the show and, in the two hours available to him, Mr Walker played tracks by some familar, and, as far as your reviewer was concerned, some unfamiliar, names. One-time Crusader Larry Carlton with Germany's SWR Big Band, the Claud Bolling Big Band playing Bye Bye Blues, the WDR Big Band playing Snarky Puppy, the Pecos River Brass outifit playing Somewhere Over the Rainbow in a live recording at the Pocket Sandwich Theatre, Dallas, Andy Martin ('bone man with Gordon Goodwin) playing Hanging with Herman with the Metropole Orchestra, these were just some of the numbers on Walker's playlist.

Pop-up station idents peppered the show...Mark Nightingale, John Fedchock, John C Smith (Pecos River Brass), Chris Walden (LA-based German big band MD, composer/arranger), Chris Dean. Yes, Steve Walker clearly has a useful contacts' book!

As this week's programme neared its end Walker squeezed in one of his own numbers (working with fellow trumpeter Louis Dowdeswell) between Laurence Cottle's Extreme Big Band and Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band. Mr Walker keeps good company!
