The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Lockdown Lindsay - June 22

Lindsay was hitting the Pinot Grigio tonight, so, were we in for an evening of sophistication?

 Hardly ...!

 Boll weevils were the first subject in tonight's illustrated lecture in which Lindsay sang Vera Hill's Boll Weevil Holler. It reminded me of my music shop days when, after we'd ran out of Rico reeds, I explained to an irate customer that the shortage of reeds was due to the cane fields being attacked by a plague of boll weevils. He left muttering "pesky boll weevils!" I mention this anecdote to allow Lindsay time to answer the door and thus stop Chaplin (her dog) barking!

Bessie Jones is never far away and tonight it was Daniel in the Lion's Den that Lindsay chose for her sermon. I say sermon as it is a very gospel-tinged number and nobody preaches the blues better than Lindsay.

Lost John has been the centre of many folk and blues songs. Not sure where this one originated from other than a prison in the deep south.

 Finally, If You See my Little Red Rooster - not to be confused with The Rolling Stones' Little Red Rooster although there are similarities. This particular little rooster was recorded by Memphis Minnie in 1936 and featured Minnie on guitar as well as voice. Lindsay stuck with her ukulele and it sounded great even though Lindsay reported a fret buzz which wasn't audible out in cyberspace.

 Another fine one apart from the usual Facebook foul-ups towards the end. Given the song, maybe  they were fowl-ups!
