Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Enrico Tomasso & Brian Kellock: Livestream - June 13

Enrico Tomasso (trumpet/flugel); Brian Kellock (piano).

Thanks to the usual Facebook shenanigans that seem to plague me when  I log in to this particular stream I reached the end of the show 3 minutes after everyone had gone home! No one else seems to have this problem - maybe I was born under the wrong sign.

Fortunately, although I only heard disjointed versions of Who Cares?; Azalea and Ko-Ko, the Gods smiled on me and allowed Thanks For The Memory to be rendered untarnished.

With Brian Kellock on piano, and reminiscent of those classic Ruby Braff/Ellis Larkins' recordings, this was, arguably, the finest moment of the series so far. It would be good to hear Brian and Rico doing an album together in proper studio conditions - now that would really be something!

The beer this week was Whitstable Bay which, presumably, is brewed in Whistable Bay - a Kentish resort noted for its oysters.

Also, during the stop start period, there was a sketch of young Rico with Louis Armstrong as well as one of Rico who, according to the comments, was wearing Clark sandals.

Next weekend  Spats returns as Rico's accomplice.
