This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Ben Crosland Quintet: not at the Langtoun Jazz Festival - June 26

Dave O'Higgins (tenor sax); John Etheridge (guitar); Steve Lodder (keys); Ben Crosland (bass guitar); Sebastiaan de Krom (drums).

Ben Crosland should have been playing Sunny Afternoon on a sunny evening in Kirkaldy. However, the best laid schemes of mice and men do occasionally gang awry.

This was just such an  occasion. As we don't need reminding, the whole world has gang awry - not least the jazz world. The plan was for Ben Crosland to strut his Kinks project for the good burghers of Kilcaldy along with some selected Scottish musicians.

Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way but all was not lost. After an interview by Crosland with one of the Kirkaldy team we switched to some live clips of the band in happier times.

Readers may recollect that their first album was one of my CDs of the Year back in 2018 and it was great to hear and see them live. O'Higgins was taking tenor sax playing to rarely reached heights, Etheridge was doing what he does best - only better - and Steve Lodder was up for it. So too were Crosland and de Krom. This was a band!
