Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Ballads Before Bed #2 - May 19

Paul Edis (piano)

A second in a developing series of Paul Edis' late night lockdown Ballads Before Bed YouTube performances. A brief introduction then, without further commentary, thirty minutes or so of relaxed, superlative piano playing.

My One and Only Love (comp. Guy Wood/lyrics Robert Mellin) set the mood. A drink in hand (McEwan's Champion, a killer 7.3%)...ahhh! When I Fall in Love (comp. Victor Young/lyrics Edward Heyward), yes, this was perfect late night material. Our host took Rodgers and Hart's Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered at the right pace, that is, real slow with Lorenz Hart's lyrics (including the verse) sung in the listener's - and possibly Edis' - head.

We'll Be Together Again (comp. Carl Fisher/lyrics Frankie Laine) maintained the relaxed mood, perhaps the title a pointer to the not-too-distant future - we will be together again...at a real, live gig! The late-nineteenth century Scottish song The Skye Boat Song could have been tonight's lullaby but pianist Edis had a couple more to play - Jimmy Van Heusen's Darn That Dream (lyrics Eddie DeLange) is one of the great tunes, its inclusion in the set most welcome, and, to finish, Horace Silver's Peace. Good night.
