Bebop Spoken There

Melissa Aldana: ''Having to play a ballads album, which is something very revealing for a saxophone player, would help me to question some new aspects of how to go deeper into sound." (DownBeat May, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Paul Edis: Lockdown Live! - April 10

(By Russell)

Episode four. Lunchtime Jazz - Paul Edis Solo it said on YouTube. Pianist Paul Edis is, like most, observing the lockdown restrictions which, more than ever, affords him the opportunity to practice and perhaps write some new material. Harold Arlen's I've Got the World on a String opened today's one hour set. A super tune played by a super piano player.

Comments posted indicated people were watching from far and wide including Vietnam! What time was it in the Far East? In Blaydon on Tyne it was shortly after one in the afternoon as Edis played a Blaydon Jazz Club favourite - Stella by Starlight. Was Roly Veitch watching? A super tune played by a super piano player. Our London based pianist suggested Start Over (comp. P. Edis) had something of Ben Folds Five and Ravel about it. Close listening was called for. Ravel, yes, BFF, possibly. Further listening/research required.

Your correspondent last heard I Wish You Love at Core Music, Hexham when violinist Daniel John Martin, in the company of Swing Manouche, played and sang it. Today it was Edis' turn - a super tune.

BSH is aware that Tony Eales is in danger of going stir crazy cooped up as he his in the wilds of County Durham. He requested of Edis that he play either Here's That Rainy Day or Meditation. Well, lucky Mr E heard both!

A request from Kate Edis for Missing You couldn't be denied otherwise there was the prospect of a 'Your dinner is in the oven' scenario in the Edis household. Kate was at work, she's in the frontline fighting - and winning! - against COVID-19. it was a good one, Kate, honest!

Another vocal - On the Street Where You LiveOf Mice and Men (comp. P. Edis) and an Easter time Lord of the Dance took us near enough to two o'clock. One more, from the Paul Edis Sextet album Mister Hipster, the New Orleans' street groove Administrate This! A good way to close the show. More next week (April 17, one o'clock) live from London - don't miss it!

Six hour difference in Saigon, Russell. So we get it here at 7.00p.m.
Thanks to Paul, of course, but thanks also to all the other musicians helping us, online, to get our jazz fix! I've enjoyed stuff posted by Roly, Mick Shoulder,Lindsay Hannon,Strictly Smoking....and others. Whether stuck in Croxdale or Ho Chi Minh City, it all helps keep us sane.

Hi,
Pleased you got back from Chicago alright, Paul Edis and you tube, a partnership made in heaven, I can listen to Paul play piano all day, with or without his trio and lets face it, where would all us jazzers be without you tube at this stressful time.
