This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Jazz and Poetry in 1958











Maurice sent me this piece of northeast jazz history pictured above. The event took place on June 25, 1958.
Interesting to note the pianist with the Barry Dixon Septet was Bill Harper. As I don't recognise any of the other names perhaps Bill might care to enlighten us?
Ralph Watson, the reader sitting on the piano, went on to have an acting career:
Ralph Watson (born 20 January 1936) is a British actor whose credits include Z-Cars, Dixon of Dock Green, Doctor Who (in the serials The Web of Fear, The Monster of Peladon and Horror of Fang Rock),Porridge, Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, The Bill, Agatha Christie's Poirot and Casualty.

I have no remembrance of this gig at all.It is really wierd but 3 of the band members were close friends during my youth but in 1958 I was in the RAF and had not had contact for sometime. I do not remember Barry Dixon at all.Was it organised by Maurice Summerfield?
