Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Adison Evans - Hero

Adison Evans (bar/alt); Matthew Jodrell (tpt/flug); Mathis Picard (pno); Dan Chmielinski (bs); Roberto Giaquinto (dms); Melanie Charles (vcl - 3 tks).
(Review by Lance).
In this, her debut album, Evans pays tribute to those Heroes who have shaped her into the person/musician she is today. These heroes are Beyoncè with whom Evans toured the world, Stevie Wonder, her musical mentor, Steve Wilson, her saxophone hero Sonny Rollins and no doubt many others.

Evans has that lovely fruity baritone sound reminiscent of Gerry Mulligan but with perhaps a little more warmth and she can play the, in other hands, lugubrious instrument with the fluidity of a fast-fingered tenorist. The ideas flow logically - Gary Smulyan has got a fight on his hands come DB Poll time!
Jodrell plays trumpet like Lee Morgan or Freddie Hubbard reincarnated. He's a blower and another one to look out for.
Given her Beyoncè background, it's not surprising to find a Ms B tune on the album. Blue, sung by Melanie Charles. Charles also provides the vocals on a couple of Evans' originals - Mama and Do What's Best for You.
Piano, bass, and drums provide the support needed making this a most listenable album as well  as putting Evans and Jodrell on my 'Names to look out for in the future' list. - add Melanie Charles to the list, in fact, let's keep an eye out for the whole band!
Lance.
