I first came across this band just over a year ago when John and Faye played a very enjoyable duo gig at The Jazz Cafe. It was one of their first gigs and at the time, I thought they had great potential. Following on from an extremely well-received performance at GIJF last Sunday the band played another marvellous gig on Friday night at the Jazz Coop. I am happy to say that this band has definitely fulfilled this early promise and now with drums on board.
The trio played a kicking improvised set full of hard hitting riffs and rhythms. Although really free in format, the music was really accessible so much so that there were a couple of audience members actually dancing to the grooves. John Pope normally seen on double bass was a revelation on electric bass using various electronic gizmos to produce all nature of fascinating effects. The addition of Christian Alderson on drums really gives the band a grounding and focus - a very positive addition indeed. Faye MacCalman was simply awesome giving an unrelenting exhibition of tenor and clarinet playing incorporating an unbelievable range of tones and sounds. Given how her playing has developed in the last year who knows how far this young lady will go in the jazz world? At the end of the set, the audience gave a truly deserved rousing ovation.
The gig was part of the first Koan series of improvised music to be held over the next three months at The Globe. The events aim to promote a range of improvised music. Last night the evening was started off by the duo trubba not and Nigel of Coalburns a combination of improvised guitar and vocals augmented with strange electronic devices. Concluding the evening Sean Cotterill played computer, programming sounds in real time as the code was displayed on a screen!
A varied and thoroughly enjoyable evening with the added bonus of quality hand-pulled ale.
