This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. RIP Don Rendell

The devastating news has come through that Don Rendell died on Tuesday (October 20) aged 89. One of the greatest British tenor saxophone players Don Rendell is remembered in the north not only for his association with Ian Carr (Pictured left with Don on photo by Jack Goodwin) but also for his appearance with the Newcastle Big Band. It was in 1973 on that day when Sunderland won the FA Cup in the afternoon and Don Rendell played with the Big Band in the evening The big difference was that I was only listening to the match on the radio whereas I was actually on stage with the great man!
Not that this was the first time our paths had crossed. Back in 1965 I was staying overnight at a hotel in Rawtenstall in Lancashire. I was having my evening meal when I heard the sound of a tenor sax coming from an adjoining room. I questioned the waitress about it. "There's a jazz club on, Don Rendell or somebody." Or somebody! I almost choked myself finishing off my meal. He was in splendid form - was he ever anything else? - and for one night only, to me, Rawtenstall was the finest place on Earth.
The last time I heard Don was at the Ian Carr Memorial concert at the South Bank Centre and age certainly hadn't withered nor custom staled his infinite variety.
We mourn the loss of a true jazz giant.
Sadly missed may he rest in peace.

I remember him first as a consistently creative musician. Hearing him first with the Dankworth Seven I followed his great work through so many exciting bands. Meeting him on many occasions I always found him genial and enthusiastic. Sadly missed
