This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Paul Gowland’s Allstars @ The Jazz Café March 15

Night out with the ladies, brought us to the Jazz Café and a decent crowd, Lance and I had a quick chat about who was going to review, but as he was off to Salsa after the first set,  I got the job.  We managed to get a table with some other Jazz regulars, thanks to Jamie Toms and co.   Charlie Parker’s Scrapple From The Apple was a lively start to the set, and featured Paul Gowland on Alto, with a great section of 4s to exhibit the skills of this cluster of fine musicians. 
A switch to the melodic Tenor and a gentle Albatross soared the skies of the Café…. What a beautiful tune.   Bill Evans’ waltz Very Early brought out the technical ability of Mark Jolliffe as he effortlessly danced around the keys and Midnight Voyage delivered with the melodic tenor sax and tinkling piano, the tenor solo displayed exquisite trills and there was a noteworthy bass solo from Willie Angus.  I’ll Remember April beguiled the appreciative audience and saw another round of 4s… a cracking end to the first set.
It must indeed have been a night for the ladies… as Ana Maria opened the second set, a switch to a different Alto Sax for this set… mine as it happens… Paul wanted a blow of a Trevor James Signature Series… so this was his opportunity to do so… a much brighter sound… and it’s great to hear it played so well… I’m just a beginner… although Paul Gowland has self-effacingly said the same of himself… well if that is true… I must be an absolute beginner!  A Horace Silver number The Preacher brought Mark Jolliffe’s captivating piano to the fore… he really was in his element.  Days and Nights Waiting beguiled us with a delightful bass solo from Willie Angus, and indeed he went on to charm us further with his skill during Scarborough Fair.   Chucho, with scorching alto sax, and Paul Gowland mopping his brow… it was kinda warm in the now packed out café;  Willie kept his cool with his strumming  during a magical bass solo and a flourishing drum solo showed off Mark Robertson’s skills… looking forward to reading your book Mark… it will be released in the summer so watch this space!  Time to slow things down again as we were serenaded by the compelling tenor sax during Cat’s Cradle, but the night was to finish on a superb upbeat Friday Night at the Cadillac Club.
