Jazz promotions are returning to Nairn. Once renowned for
high quality jazz concerts and an annual jazz festival that saw musicians
including Stanley Turrentine, Gene Harris, Benny Green, Scott Hamilton and
Warren Vache appear in the small seaside town in the Scottish Highlands, Nairn
was left without any regular live jazz when promoter and jazz festival founder
Ken Ramage died in 2011. Now a group of enthusiasts is hoping to renew the
town’s jazz reputation through the recently formed Jazz Nairn, promoting
concerts and working towards the jazz festival’s return. Italian pianist
Rossano Sportiello, a popular visitor to Nairn during Ken Ramage’s time, plays
the first concert on Thursday May 8 at Nairn Community and Arts Centre. The
National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland, with guest saxophonist Gordon
McNeill, follows on July 17.
