Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview Gateshead International Jazz Festival 2013. Jazz from the North

Sunday 7 April. Northern Rock Foundation Hall. 3:00 pm
Jazz from the North.
(Preview by Russell)
Another helping of the very best of jazz from the north. One of these showcase sessions could be scheduled every day from now until next year’s festival and there would be so many great musicians still to be heard.
Three bands feature over three hours and there is no better way to start than with Watson Walker Edis. North east based, world class - that’s Lewis Watson (tenor and soprano saxophones), Rob Walker (drums) and Paul Edis (piano). Sightings of the trio are rare. This will be only their fourth public performance. All three musicians contribute compositions. Pieces range from the pacific calm to the raging tempest. Thousands of gigs, then along come Watson Walker Edis. It makes it all worthwhile. Recommended.
Trumpeter Neil Yates’ Five Countries Trio is an international affair - guitarist Zsolt Bende is based in Romania, percussionist Cormac Byrne resides in England - and this performance is in association with Jazz North (the new jazz development agency for the north of England). Expect folk and jazz melodies. Seek out their Five Countries CD.
The afternoon concludes with a set by Oddarrang. Led by drummer/composer Olavi Louhivuori, the band from Finland boasts an interesting line-up; trombone, cello, guitar, double bass and Louhivuori’s drums. The northern tundra will chill the air. An ‘absorbing sonic landscape’ is promised. Oddarrang’s visit is supported by Music Finland, ESEK, Arts Council Finland and the Embassy of Finland.
