This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. GIJF Day 2: Jazz Record Requests

A live edition of Jazz Record Requests! The welcoming yet authoritative voice of Alyn Shipton visits jazz homes tuned to BBC 3 every Saturday afternoon. Here at the Sage Shipton invited the audience to listen to requests, request a track of their own and hear    some jazz ‘live’ from the stage in Hall Two at the Sage. The programme will be broadcast this coming Saturday (13 April) on Radio 3, so you will have to listen to find out which tracks were chosen for broadcast!
A bonus for the audience in the hall was a performance by Lighthouse Trio (Tim Garland, Gwilym Simcock and Asaf Sirkis), Simcock solo and the wonderful Zoe Rahman played Ellington. The musicians, including Larry Stabbins (he was on late night duty the previous evening), joined the presenter to discuss their love of the music.  Shipton and the Sage are to be commended for including a listener’s choice of a tune by the West Jesmond Rhythm Kings featuring the late Mike Durham (musician and festival organiser of the international Whitley Bay Jazz Festival and Whitley Bay Classic Jazz Party). It is to be hoped JRR, as it is affectionately known, returns next year and the year after.

Er, well, not recently he doesn't - the timing having been messed about by 1) the differing dates of introduction of US/UK daylight time and 2) Wagner (yet again!)

It's about time Radio 3 fixed the time of JRR and pushed the opera to the graveyard slot! Oooh, was that a pig I just saw flying by my window?

When I finally did get to hear JRR (2130 this evening) it was certainly well worth the wait.
