The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Human – Being Human

This band could be described as a British Free Jazz supergroup all its members have featured in many contemporary  bands of recent times (eg. Evan Parker, Convergence Quartet, World Sangune Report).
 All but a pair of the numbers are composed by drummer Davis the other two being collaborative efforts by the quartet. The opening tracks Frozen Goat and the title track Being Human are loud free and proud. Track 3 however Little Particles is a mellow contemplative piece  which I actually had to turn the volume up for.  I am a Planet  is another wild barnstormer with great interplay between the band vibrant violin , piano ,drums and trumpet. Cartagena  showcases Hawkins piano together with  Bates staccato violin. The final number,  Vinilla Life, again displays the bands more subtle side. 
As can be expected from these participants this is not easy listening nor is it for the faint hearted but it is a crashing tour de force with occasional bursts of mellowness thrown in. I would love to see this band live but if listening at home I wouldn't recommend it as background music as it really demands one's full attention.
