(Review by Russell)
The Jazz Lounge came into its own during the late night sessions. A set of AC/DC tunes by jazz artists was going to be one of two things - a total flop or a triumph. German vocalist/pianist Jens Thomas worked with Finnish trumpeter Verneri Pohjola to interpret the back catalogue of the Antipodean hard rock megastars. Thomas cut a foppish figure plucked fromBerlin cabaret.
Outrageously decadent, immensely talented, he held the audience spell bound as he delivered a nuanced reworking of Bon Scott and Brian Johnson. Pohjola’s superb trumpet playing punctuated Thomas’ lyrics. Highway to Hell (as you’ve never heard it), The Jack and You Shook Me All Night Long were brilliantly conceived. A magical performance won prolonged applause. A unique event. The high point of the festival…so far.
