This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Jazz in the Afternoon - Crescent Club, Cullercoats

What a jolly afternoon! The number 9 bus from Jarrow tied up nicely with the Metro at North Shields and I was at the Crescent Club in under half an hour. Seats were at a premium and I only just managed to squeeze in next to my favourite - non related - auntie.

The band were late in starting anyway - hanging about waiting for a non-arriving bass playing dep for Carstairs whom it appears is in New York (USA).
I didn't mind. The beer was good, the ladies lovely and, when the band did stomp off, the music was fine.
After Dinah, a semi arranged You Came a Long Way From St. Louis, Mood Indigo, I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter and Bye Bye Blackbird. The latter had vocal by Joan who followed up with When You're Smiling before the band rounded off the set with Bye Bye Blues.
Lots of old friends to chat with - Gordon Solomon, Jimmy Ruddick, Barry Soulsby, Jimmy McKeown, Teresa, fashion icon Mary B... Many stories exchanged with Gordon, hugs from Alice - and Teresa after her fine renditions of Almost Like Being in Love and Once in a While.
Didn't win the raffle but, after having such an enjoyable afternoon, maybe I did - winning is about much more than a bottle of plonk!
