The Great American Songbook
At the start of the 20th C two large migrations from Europe and
the Southern United States crammed into New York’s Manhattan Island
In this frenetic hothouse the new arrivals from the European and
Black-American diaspora created a new music.
The popular American Songbook was one of the glories of the 20th C.
The songs of Kern, Berlin, the Gershwins, Porter, Rodgers, Arlen
 - written first for theatre, radio, records, movies
but soon everywhere in bars, clubs, halls, cabaret, online.

Song is the oldest and most widespread human musical expression.
Voiced by interpreters as distinctive as Louis, Fred Astaire, Ethel Waters,
Ella, Judy Garland, Lee Wiley, Susannah McCorkle, Frank Sinatra,
Aretha Franklin, Billy Eckstine, Vic Damone, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Shore,
Tony Bennett, Bing Crosby, Barbra Streisand, Nina Simone,
Chris Connor, K. D. Lang, Carmen McRae  …  and more,
the American Songbook has portrayed human lives through modern times -
their joy, infatuation, rejection, hope, shrugged-off pain, tenderness, gospel faith.

We will delight in the music, and critically discuss the melodic riches
and the significance to audiences.
