1000 Trades, 16 Frederick St, Birmingham B1 3HE: Tony Kofi & 52nd Street. A new project exploring the beginnings of bebop, when New York’s 52nd Street was buzzing with the new music and the first generation of modern jazz musicians was turning the music world on its head. With stellar altoist Kofi are Simon Finch (trumpet) Alex Webb (piano) Hamish Moore (bass) and Miles Pillinger (drums), playing works by Tadd Dameron, Fats Navarro, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk and of course Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Sunday 27th September (lunchtime)
Ronnie Scott’s, Frith Street, Soho W1: Coltrane and Hartman on Impulse! feat. Mark Lockheart and Marvin Muoneké. In John Coltrane’s centenary year, this show explores the repertoire of Trane’s immortal 1963 collaboration with baritone singer Johnny Hartman. Rising vocalist Marvin Muoneké (‘A new vocal sensation in the UK’ – JazzFM) is joined by top tenor saxophonist Lockheart and a rhythm section of Gary Crosby (bass), Alex Webb (piano) and Alfonso Vitale (drums).
